Birmingham, Alabama, is the largest city in the state, and once was known as the industrial center of the southern United States. Recently, however, the population has dropped as people have moved out to the suburbs. Many people in the city have numerous physical needs, and despite being in the heart of the "Bible belt," there is great spiritual need here as well.

Liberia was originally founded by American freed slaves back in 1847. The country did well and established economic independence with its rich natural resources. However, a pair of terrible civil wars from 1980 to 2003 ripped the country apart. Its buildings and infrastructure are in shambles, not to mention the lives of so many Liberians. More than 250,000 were killed and over 1 million became refugees. Nearly every child was affected as most lost at least one of their parents and education was halted. The youth desire to rebuild the country, but it will take a lot of work and a lot of prayer.

The people of Romania suffered greatly under Communism. However, after the 1989 Revolution they have worked to rebuild. The economy has slowly begun to turn, and the country was accepted into the European Union in 2007. Churches that were once persecuted under Communism are now growing rapidly. However, there is still great need, particularly in the health system. While the leaders are working hard to improve the conditions, society still often writes off children who are terminally ill. Ukraine has so much potential as the second largest country on the European continent behind the Russian Federation, but the effects of communism still linger after two decades. The country is rich in mineral deposits such as coal and iron ore, which provide jobs and help the economy, but many Ukranians still tread the line of poverty. Children have especially suffered in Ukraine. Tens of thousands of children live on the streets and more than 100 thousand live in orphanages.
